Far-right protests against the impeachment of Yoon Suk-yeol were riddled with blatant anti-Chinese slogans. Claims such as “China is behind the rigged election” or “China is waging unrestricted warfare” even appeared in Yoon's defense in the impeachment trial. A far-right youth group assaulted Chinese on Lamb Skewer Street near Konkuk Univ. In Guro by-election a far-right candidate of Jeon Kwang-hoon incited hatred against Chinese.
Why does the far right stoke anti-Chinese sentiment? Trump's White House's talk of concern about “Chinese interference” after the election of Lee Jae-myung likely emboldened them. We will discuss what's the root of anti-Chinese sentiment and how to resist the far right’s attempts to fuel it.
