The Lee Jae-myung government’s real estate policies are emerging as a key factor behind its declining approval ratings among young people. The government recently announced a real estate tax reform plan and is expected to roll out a plan for expanding the housing supply, claiming such measures can stabilize housing prices.

Will such policies actually resolve the housing hardship faced by young people? Why has the housing issue become such a long-standing problem and what are the alternatives? We aim to answer these questions from a Marxist perspective.
