이재명 정부가 메가프로젝트와 ‘7대 SEED 사업’으로 핵에너지를 국가 전략 산업의 하나로 삼고 신규 원전 건설, 소형모듈원전(SMR) 개발 등 핵발전 확대를 거침없이 밀어붙이고 있습니다. 그러면서 핵에너지가 ‘미래의 먹거리’이자 ‘미래 청정 에너지’라고 합니다. 정말로 그럴까요?

📌 최무영 교수는 서울대학교에서 오랫동안 물리학을 연구하고 가르쳤고, 과학기술의 책임성·공공성을 지향하는 과학자들의 네트워크인 ‘책임과학자연대’의 공동대표이기도 합니다. ‘책임과학자연대’는 최근 이재명 정부가 SMR과 핵융합을 청정에너지 산업으로 지정한 것을 비판하는 성명을 발표했습니다.

He is also co-chair of the Association of Responsible Scientists and Technologists, a network of scientists committed to accountability and the public good in science and technology. The group recently issued a statement criticizing the Lee Jae-myung government’s designation of SMRs and nuclear fusion as clean energy industries.
Through its megaprojects and the 7 SEED Projects, the Lee Jae-myung government has designated nuclear energy as a national strategic industry and is pressing ahead, without hesitation, with an expansion of nuclear power: building new reactors, developing small modular reactors (SMRs), and more. It insists that nuclear energy is a “growth engine of the future” and “the clean energy of tomorrow.” But is that really the case?
